How to Connect ChatGPT to LinkedIn
Short answer: add a LinkedIn MCP server to ChatGPT in Developer mode. LinkedIn's own plugin in ChatGPT can look up a person's title, company and location. To read full profiles, search people, work with your LinkedIn messages or publish posts, ChatGPT needs more tools. A hosted LinkedIn MCP server such as LinkMCP gives it 34 of them. This guide shows the exact steps.
What you need
- A paid ChatGPT plan: Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu. You add MCP servers in Developer mode, and the Free plan does not have it.
- ChatGPT on the web (chatgpt.com) for the setup.
- A LinkMCP account. If you do not have one, you can create it in the sign-in window during the setup.
On a Business or Enterprise workspace, an admin can turn Developer mode off. If you cannot find it, ask your admin.
Connect ChatGPT to LinkedIn, step by step
- In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode.
- Go to chatgpt.com/plugins and click +. Name the app LinkMCP. Under Connection, use the public endpoint and paste this address:
https://app.linkmcp.io/api/mcp
- Create the connection. A LinkMCP window opens. Sign in with your email (you get a 6-digit code) or with Google, and approve the access. A new LinkMCP account starts with the 7-day free trial.
- Start a new chat. Click + in the message box, choose Developer mode and turn on LinkMCP.
- Ask your question. ChatGPT asks you to confirm before a write action, for example before it sends a message or publishes a post.
You can also start on our side: start a free trial, pick ChatGPT, and the setup screen shows the same steps with the address to copy.
Prompts to try first
These work in the free trial, before you connect your own LinkedIn account:
Use LinkMCP to look up this LinkedIn profile and give me a short brief: role, company, time in the role, anything notable. [profile URL]
Use LinkMCP to get the recent posts of [company page URL] and tell me what they talk about most.
Find the work email of [name] at [company domain] with LinkMCP.
These need your LinkedIn account connected (a paid plan):
Search LinkedIn for heads of marketing at software companies in Berlin and list ten, with their profile URLs.
Show my unread LinkedIn messages and draft a reply to each. Do not send anything.
If ChatGPT answers without LinkedIn data, name the app and the tool, as OpenAI suggests. For example: "Use the LinkMCP tool linkedin_get_profile for this URL." Other tools you can name are linkedin_search_people, linkedin_list_conversations and linkedin_create_post.
LinkedIn's own plugin or an MCP server?
- LinkedIn's plugin is made by LinkedIn and is in ChatGPT's plugin directory. OpenAI's page for it describes profile lookups: title, company, location and follower count, with a link to the profile (checked 2026-10-05). If that is all you need, it is the simpler choice.
- A LinkedIn MCP server such as LinkMCP adds full profiles, people search and Sales Navigator search, your inbox and messages, posts, comments and reactions, and email lookups. It acts through your own LinkedIn account, so read the section on account risk below.
More detail on what ChatGPT can and cannot read is in Can ChatGPT Read LinkedIn Profiles?. For searches with Sales Navigator filters, see the Sales Navigator MCP guide.
If it does not work
- No "+" for a new app at chatgpt.com/plugins: Developer mode is off, or your plan or workspace does not allow it.
- ChatGPT does not use LinkMCP: turn it on for the chat (+ → Developer mode), or name the tool in your prompt.
- A tool says it needs a connected LinkedIn account: that tool acts through your own LinkedIn account. The message links to the plan page and to the LinkedIn connection.
Can this put my LinkedIn account at risk?
Yes, it can. Any automated use of LinkedIn can put an account at risk, and no tool can promise that LinkedIn will not restrict an account. How much you do matters most. LinkMCP puts daily limits and pacing on every action through your account, and a warm-up limit on connection requests for new or quiet accounts. That lowers the risk. It does not remove it. The limits are on our security page, and the guide on LinkedIn automation risk explains what can trigger a restriction.
What it costs
LinkMCP starts with a 7-day free trial, and you do not need a credit card. In the trial, profile and company lookups, posts and post comments, and email and phone lookups work. Searches, messages, posting and Sales Navigator act through your own LinkedIn account, and connecting it needs a paid plan. Starter costs $19 per month. New trials get their first month of Starter for $9.50.
